Supportive Tools & Services for Families
At Howland Public Library, we strive to make our spaces and services inclusive and welcoming for all.
Beginning with the 2024 redesign of our Children’s Room featuring calming colors, flexible seating, and passive activities, we’ve continued to expand sensory-friendly options.
In 2025, we introduced a sensory box to support patrons during visits and programs, and our staff earned recognition as an Autism Supportive Environment through training with the Anderson Center for Autism. This year, we’re adding even more resources to ensure every child and family feels comfortable.
Items to Support Your Visit
Children, teens, and their caregivers are welcome to ask for any of our sensory, reading, or comfort tools at the Youth Services Desk. We’re happy to help you find what you need to make your visit enjoyable.
Communication Board
Coming soon! Our communication board and poster will use pictures and symbols to help patrons express needs and navigate the library. They make communication easier for those who are nonverbal, have limited speech, or prefer visual supports. Patrons can point to images to ask for help, find a quiet space, or request items.
Sensory Box
Our Sensory Support Box is designed to help patrons feel calm and comfortable during their visit. It includes noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, calm strips, a weighted lap pad, and sensory-friendly snacks. These items are available for use while you are in the library and can also be used during programs like storytime to support regulation and focus.
Reading Tools
We offer tools to make reading easier and more comfortable for all patrons. These include guided reading strips and finger readers, which can help with focus, tracking text, and reducing visual stress for readers with diverse needs. These items are available for use in the library.
Calm Corner
The Calm Corner is a quiet space created with a pop-up tent, available by request, in the Youth Services Program Room. It provides children with a cozy, enclosed area to take a break, self-regulate, and recharge during library visits.
