Plant a Garden, Taste the World

Ready to spice things up? The Howland Public Library is proud to offer two unique resources for our local foodies and green thumbs. Located in our vintage card catalog, these collections are organized alphabetically to help you find exactly what you need.

  • Seed Library: A free exchange of flower, herb, fruit, and vegetable seeds to help your garden thrive!

  • Spice Library: Taste, smell, and experiment. Grab just enough for a single recipe and save pantry space while you explore global flavors.

You are welcome to try as many different varieties as you like! We simply ask that you limit your selection to one (1) packet of each seed and one (1) bag of each spice per patron/visit.

How to Use the Spice Library

Say goodbye to half-used jars gathering dust in your pantry. We’ve done the prep work for you!

  • Search the catalog for pre-labeled bags of spices.

  • Each bag contains approximately 1-2 tablespoons (just enough for a new recipe!).

  • Take your sample home and get cooking!
