A Common Thread Opens March 11th

The Howland Public Library presents A Common Thread, the third annual group exhibition from the women’s collective CoMFY. The exhibit will be on view in The Community Room Exhibit Space from March 11th- April 1st 2017. An Artists’ Reception will be held on Saturday March 11th from 5 pm – 7 pm.

For this show, CoMFY members were asked to interpret the expression, “A Common Thread.” The concept was chosen as an expression of how the individual members are connected through their experiences as women. The theme is also a reference to the traditional processes and materials of the decorative arts and handcrafts historically associated with women; sewing, knitting, embroidery and weaving. Many of the artists in the exhibit have taken these materials and incorporated them into their sculptures, paintings and drawings while others have chosen to address the theme conceptually. The resulting exhibit celebrates the common thread that unites the group.

Exhibiting Artists: Maria Amor, Jennifer Blakeslee, Kit Burke Smith, Caiming Cheung, Stephanie Dignan, Jan Dolan, Theresa Gooby, Meredith Hairston, Erica Hauser, Philomena Kiernan, Margot Kingon, Lorraine LeClair, Lori Merhidge, Chris Sanders, Keely Sheehan, Jennifer Smith, Carol Stanford, Bekah Starr, Kat Stoutenborough, Robyn Tauss, Catherine Welshman, and Anna West.

CoMFY, which stands for Creatives, Mamas, Friends and Yahoos is a collective of women artists from the Beacon area founded by local artist Kat Stoutenborough in 2011. Members of CoMFY come from many creative disciplines; visual artists, writers, actors, designers, dancers, musicians, as well as culinary artists. Today, the group has grown to over 100 members in their Facebook group and meets in person on monthly basis.
